Abstract
Adults conceptualize the world in terms of enduring physical objects.Sortal conceptsprovide conditions of individuation (establishing the boundaries of objects) and numerical identity (establishing whether an object is thesame oneas one encountered at some other time). In the adult conceptual system, there are two roughly hierarchical levels of object sortals. Most general is the sortalbounded physical objectitself, for which spatiotemporal properties provide the criteria for individuation and identity. More specific sortals, such asdogorcar,rely on additional types of properties to provide criteria for individuation and identity. We conjecture that young infants might represent only the general sortal,object,and construct more specific sortals later (theObject-first Hypothesis). This is closely related to Bower's (1974) conjecture that infants use spatiotemporal information to trace identity before they use property information. Five studies using the visual habituation paradigm were conducted to address theObject-first Hypothesis. In these studies, 10-month-old infants were able to use spatiotemporal information but failed to use property/kind information to set up representations of numerically distinct individuals, thus providing empirical evidence for theObject-first Hypothesis. Finally, infants succeed at object individuation in terms of more specific sortals by 12 months. The relation between success at our task and early noun comprehension is discussed.

Infants can use temporary or scant categorical information to individuate objects
2024, Cognitive PsychologyIn a standard individuation task, infants see two different objects emerge in alternation from behind a screen. If they can assign distinct categorical descriptors to the two objects, they expect to see both objects when the screen is lowered; if not, they have no expectation at all about what they will see (i.e., two objects, one object, or no object). Why is contrastive categorical information critical for success at this task? According to the kind account, infants must decide whether they are facing a single object with changing properties or two different objects with stable properties, and access to permanent, intrinsic, kind information for each object resolves this difficulty. According to the two-system account, however, contrastive categorical descriptors simply provide the object-file system with unique tags for individuating the two objects and for communicating about them with the physical-reasoning system. The two-system account thus predicts that any type of contrastive categorical information, however temporary or scant it may be, should induce success at the task. Two experiments examined this prediction. Experiment 1 tested 14-month-olds (N = 96) in a standard task using two objects that differed only in their featural properties. Infants succeeded at the task when the object-file system had access to contrastive temporary categorical descriptors derived from the objects’ distinct causal roles in preceding support events (e.g., formerly a support, formerly a supportee). Experiment 2 tested 9-month-olds (N = 96) in a standard task using two objects infants this age typically encode as merely featurally distinct. Infants succeeded when the object-file system had access to scant categorical descriptors derived from the objects’ prior inclusion in static arrays of similarly shaped objects (e.g., block-shaped objects, cylinder-shaped objects). These and control results support the two-system account’s claim that in a standard task, contrastive categorical descriptors serve to provide the object-file system with unique tags for the two objects.
Infants' biased individuation of in-group members
2023, CognitionAdults tend to construe members of their group as “unique individuals” more than members of other groups. This study investigated whether infants exhibit this tendency, even in regard to unfamiliar arbitrary groups. Ninety-six White 1-year-olds were assigned to an Ingroup, Outgroup, or No-Group condition, based on whether or not they shared two preferences (food and shirt color) with women appearing on video sequences. In the critical trial, infants saw two women (Ingroup, Outgroup, or No-Group) – one at a time – appearing from behind a curtain. The curtain opened to reveal only one woman. Infants in the Ingroup condition looked longer at this display than infants in the other two conditions. This suggests that infants in the Ingroup condition had a stronger expectation than those in the other two conditions that there would be two women behind the curtain. In other words, infants individuated in-group members more than out-group members.
Keeping quantifier meaning in mind: Connecting semantics, cognition, and pragmatics
2023, Cognitive PsychologyA complete theory of the meaning of linguistic expressions needs to explain their semantic properties, their links to non-linguistic cognition, and their use in communication. Even though in principle interconnected, these areas are generally not pursued in tandem. We present a novel take on the semantics-cognition-pragmatics interface. We propose that formal semantic differences in expressions’ meanings lead those meanings to activate distinct cognitive systems, which in turn have downstream effects on when speakers prefer to use those expressions. As a case study, we focus on the quantifiers “each” and “every”, which can be used to talk about the same state of the world, but have been argued to differ in meaning. In particular, we adopt a mentalistic proposal about these quantifiers on which “each” has a purely individualistic meaning that interfaces with the psychological system for representing object-files, whereas “every” has a meaning that implicates a group and interfaces with the psychological system for representing ensembles. In seven experiments, we demonstrate that this account correctly predicts both known and newly-observed constraints on how “each” and “every” are pragmatically used. More generally, this integrated approach to semantics, cognition, and pragmatics suggests that canonical patterns of language use can be affected in predictable ways by fine-grained differences in semantic meanings and the cognitive systems to which those meanings connect.
Three-year-old children's reasoning about possibilities
2023, CognitionRecent studies in cognitive development suggest that preschoolers may not be able to represent alternative possibilities, and therefore may lack modal concepts such as possible, impossible, and necessary (Leahy & Carey, 2020). We present two experiments adapted from previous probability studies but have a similar logical structure as those used in the previous modal reasoning tasks (Leahy, 2023; Leahy, Huemer, Steele, Alderete, & Carey, 2022; Mody & Carey, 2016). Three-year-old children have to choose between a gumball machine that must produce the desired gumball color and a gumball machine that merely might produce the desired gumball color. Results provide preliminary evidence that three-year-old children can represent multiple incompatible possibilities, and therefore have modal concepts. Implications for the study of modal cognition, and how possibility and probability may be related are discussed.
