2010, Brain ResearchCitation Excerpt :Many studies have reported on cognitive impairment in patients who showed pathology in the NBM and its related cholinergic pathways; these patients had various diseases, such as aneurysm rupture in the anterior communicating artery, traumatic brain injury, or some form of neurologic dementia (Allen et al., 1988; Benke et al., 2005; Bigl and Arendt, 1991; Chozick, 1987; Murdoch et al., 2002; Rogers et al., 1985). However, except for post-mortem brain study, there has been no specific method of evaluation for the NBM and its cholinergic pathway (Allen et al., 1988; Benke et al., 2005; Murdoch et al., 2002). In the past, identification and visualization of the subcortical neural tract in the live human brain was impossible.
