Abstract

The literature on oral neurilemoma of the past 20 years (1945 to 1964) has been reviewed, and 106 cases of proved neurilemoma have been analyzed. We have also reported four new cases of oral neurilemoma. The distribution, by site, of the 110 cases of neurilemoma is as follows: sixty-one cases in the tongue, eleven in the palate, ten in the buccal mucosa, ten in the floor of the mouth, seven in the gingiva, six in the lips, and five in the vestibular mucosa. Fifty-three per cent of the patients were males and 47 per cent were females. The incidence of oral neurilemoma is definitely higher in patients between 10 and 29 years of age. In a great many cases the neurilemoma was causing no symptoms, and in many cases the patients had been aware of the tumor's presence for many years.

Surgical excision is the indicated treatment. A schwannoma does not recur if it is totally excised [2]. All presented cases were treated by surgical excision, and no recurrence was observed.
