2018, International Journal of Developmental NeuroscienceCitation Excerpt :On the other hand, averaged evoked responses during sleep in adults show increased amplitude in NREM sleep (Kakigi et al., 2003; Okusa and Kakigi, 2002; Coenen, 1995; Campbell et al., 1992 for a review), whereas, they are quite similar in wakefulness and REM sleep. The larger amplitude in NREM sleep in adults could be interpreted as a stronger response to stimulation; however, evidences from several studies have demonstrated that postsynaptic excitability in the lateral geniculate nucleus is decreased during slow wave sleep in the cat (Malcolm et al., 1970), and that the transfer of visual information ratio at the lateral geniculate nucleus decreases from 1-0.7 in wakefulness to 0.3 in slow wave sleep in adult rats (Coenen, 1995; Coenen and Vendrik, 1972). The spontaneous firing of primary visual cortex neurons in cats decreases during slow wave sleep in comparisons to wakefulness and REM sleep (Evarts et al., 1962).
