Estimates for neuronal loss in nbM due to normal ageing in early studies vary greatly from 23% to 50% (De Lacalle, Iraizoz, and Ma Gonzalo 1991; Lowes-Hummel et al., 1989), even 70% (Bloom et al., 1997) to no neuronal loss at all (Bloom et al., 1997; Chui et al., 1984; Whitehouse et al., 1983b). The age of donors of BigBrain and Halliday et al. ‘s study ranges from 20 to 80 years old (Amunts et al., 2013; Halliday et al., 1993).

During normal aging in humans data are more controversial as some articles found no obvious atrophy of cholinergic regions (Chui et al., 1984) while others found alterations of these regions (Lowes-Hummel et al., 1989). Data in other primates, such as macaques are also controversial as some studies (Smith et al., 2004), but not all (Voytko et al., 1995) found an age-associated loss of cholinergic neurons in the nucleus basalis of Meynert.
