Abstract

This paper reviews research studies in relation to interictal language functioning in chronic epilepsy. Areas covered include verbosity, language dominance, the impact of surgery and hypergraphia. Speech production deficits are not considered. A survey of language skills by the authors of 60 patients with intractable epilepsy is outlined. The results demonstrated a high incidence of language problems. The paucity of research in this area is discussed together with possibilities for future research endeavours.
