Imaging Acute Stroke and its
Consequences

Collection Editors: Pamela W. Schaefer and R. Gilberto González

This month we are pleased to introduce the first special collection issue of AJNR. The purpose of what I hope will become a biannual activity is to consolidate in one place some of the best articles published in AJNR. This endeavor will take full advantage of electronic publishing and of our repository by offering the interested reader topic-driven issues that will be open access and thus available to subscribers, non-subscribers, and the public in general, regardless of when the original articles were published, either electronically or in print. I hope investigators looking for a comprehensive source of imaging-related articles will find the ones chosen for these collections to be convenient, valuable, and quotable. When deciding how to inaugurate this new AJNR offering, I came to the conclusion that stroke-related articles would greatly interest our readers as our journal has played a seminal role in publishing important literature on this topic. Interest in stroke imaging crosses the boundaries of radiology into all specialties that deal with vascular disorders affecting the central nervous system.

Drs. Schaefer and González, both from the Massachusetts General Hospital, have been extensively involved investigating the applications of advanced CT and MR imaging techniques in stroke patients and the clinical implications of imaging findings in this population. Both have contributed extensively to the literature, so it is not surprising that some of the articles included in this issue come from their own institution. Both are international authorities on stroke imaging, and despite their busy schedules they graciously undertook the effort needed to compile this special collection. They looked at nearly 400 articles (all published in the last 7 years) and selected the 45 they believe to be most important. They have nicely classified them into different headings for easier perusal. I think they have done an outstanding job and I hope our readers will share my opinion. AJNR is the first imaging journal to offer these types of special issues, and I would be very interested to know what our readers’ opinions are. Please send any comments to: Castillo@med.unc.edu.
