Title: Arthur Ravenel Jr Bridge. This bridge spans the Cooper River, connecting Charleston and Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. A cable-stayed bridge, it has won multiple awards for aesthetics and functionality, a tall order since the history of Charleston and the bridge's predecessors mandated it withstand earthquakes, hurricanes, ship collisions, increasing traffic loads, and the passage of the largest of ships in this major port. The pedestrian walkway has an extended curved approach providing spectacular cross-sectional views prior to the exhilarating walk across the bridge. Its design and operation are ecologically praiseworthy. The wattage, height, and operating hours of the bridge lights, and the use of reflective rather than electric road signs, are intended to minimize adverse impacts on migratory birds and loggerhead hatchling turtles.
