Vertebral hemangioma: Retrograde embolization-stabilization with methyl methacrylate

Abstract

A new method, intraoperative retrograde embolization with a methyl methacrylate polymer injected into a vertebral hemangioma, is described. This method achieves complete intraoperative hemostasis and postoperative stabilization. No further stabilization procedures and radiation therapy are necessary. Preoperative selective angiography with embolization and consecutive laminectomy are required for this method.

Microscopically, spinal cord tissues had an orderly organization; neurons and gliocytes had a normal shape without degeneration, atrophy or necrosis (Fig. 8). It has been reported that PVP treatment is effective for 90% of patients with benign diseases; the number fell to 70% for those afflicted with malignancies [8–10]. We mixed 153Sm-EDTMP into BC to boost the anti-tumor effect of the PVP procedure.

Vertebroplasty was developed in France in the late 1980s for the treatment of vertebral angiomas [11]. Initial success with this interventional procedure in hemangiomas has led to its use in the treatment of osteoporotic and osteolytic lesions [4,11,23]. Vertebroplasty is a minimally invasive procedure resulting in prompt pain relief and has a low complication rate [13,18,19].
