2006, Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial SurgeryCitation Excerpt :A tympanic membrane, usually absent in the microtic ear, if present, raises the possibility that hearing levels may be acceptable or a conductive loss more easily corrected. Additionally, the tympanic membrane allows otoscopic monitoring because the microtic ear is at risk for otitis media and extended complications.41 The cartilaginous appendage, the cephalad portion of the microtic ear, varies in appearance and orientation.
