AJNR Update
AJNR Transitioning to Fully Electronic Publication
Toward the end of 2024, AJNR is set to undergo a significant change by fully embracing an electronic format and bidding farewell to traditional paper publications. This shift is motivated by the necessity to address rising costs linked to printing, shipping, and storage, along with our goal to maintain financial equilibrium.
The transition to an electronic format will bring a host of advantages aimed at enhancing your experience:
- More personalized content
- Enriched visual elements
- Additional images and diverse media types that are particularly beneficial in the field of neuroradiology
- Easy access to materials, commentaries, and related resources
For more information on the upcoming transition, see the following editorials and discussions:

- Please also consider signing up for email alerts for preprints, tables of contents, and case of the week
Virtual "office hours" with Dr. Wintermark
While acknowledging the sentimental value attached to physical copies, we are compelled by both practical financial considerations and a commitment to sustainability to embrace technological progress. Our emphasis is on maintaining a positive outlook and adaptability throughout this transition. To actively engage you in this continual journey, we want to hear your innovative ideas to help us shape our electronic platform.
To involve our community in this journey, AJNR has planned virtual Zoom sessions to gather feedback, concerns, and innovative ideas. By fostering an open dialogue, we aim to shape our electronic platform in line with our audience's evolving expectations.

Highlights from recent AJNR updates:
Academy of Reviewers
To assist the more junior reviewers and under the leadership of Dr. Mauricio Castillo and Dr. Alex Boutet, the AJNR has created an Academy of Reviewers with resources available to sharpen reviewing skills and the preparation of reviews. These include an educational video/podcast recorded by Dr. Castillo, Editor Emeritus for the AJNR. The Academy of Reviewers also explains the new review process used at AJNR.
Junior Editorial Board
AJNR recently received 70 applications for this new initiative. This opportunity is open to trainees and junior faculty members (<7 years in practice) and will provide Junior Editors an in-depth experience of the peer review and publishing process. Members work closely with senior and associated editors. The 2024 application period has ended and we look forward to announcing the Junior Editorial Board members at ASNR 2024.
Revamped Submission Process and Introduction of Pre-prints
The AJNR recently introduced a revamped manuscript submission process to improve efficiency, improve clarity, and expedite the dissemination of groundbreaking research within our field. One of the key features of this overhaul is the introduction of manuscript-specific submission templates, offering a more streamlined and standardized approach for authors.
The goals of these templates are to expedite publication in the case of acceptance and offer flexibility to reuse the same document for submission to another journal in the event of a rejection for AJNR.
Improved Turnaround Times
Changes to the submission process alongside the dedicated efforts of our editorial board has resulted in a substantial improvement in the turnaround times:
- Median time to first decision: 17 days
- Median time from acceptance to pre-print: 3 days
