We appreciate the opportunity to compile this bibliography of American Journal of Neuroradiology (AJNR) manuscripts related to acute stroke intervention and thank Mauricio Castillo, Editor-in-Chief of AJNR, for his kind invitation. AJNR has been the repository of many of the groundbreaking reports in this field. Many of these studies remain critically important today: these studies as a group constitute the foundation for our current clinical practice and ongoing clinical research.
We selected articles on the basis of our perception of their relevance to current clinical care and ongoing research. We apologize to any authors of studies that we omitted or neglected to include: this was a subjective but good faith effort. We judged relevance by consensus opinion and used citation rates on Google Scholar as a relatively objective estimate of importance. Following the precedent established by Schaefer and González1 in their collection of ischemic stroke imaging studies, we favored studies with larger numbers and prospective design. We did not include any studies on imaging selection for acute stroke intervention, because this topic was covered in the previous collection.
We organized the list of studies by logical categories, and we annotated each citation with a brief sentence or 2 indicating its important contribution. This annotation was helpful to us in selecting the studies. We hope it is helpful to you, the reader, as well.
