The Board of Trustees and the President of New York University (NYU) Medical Center recently announced the appointment of Robert I. Grossman, MD, as Dean of the School of Medicine and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the NYU Hospitals Center. This accomplishment puts an exclamation mark on what continues to be an illustrious career in medicine.
The American Society of Neuroradiology (ASNR) and each individual member in the Society should take pride in the many achievements of its current President and Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Neuroradiology. Bob has been a major force within ASNR for the past 2 decades, having filled many roles including Program Director Chair, Publication Committee Chair, Program Committee Chair, and, before becoming Editor-in-Chief, one of the Journal's Senior Editors. We should recognize Bob's achievements outside of our Society, which have led, in great measure, to his appointment as Dean. The highlights of Bob's contributions to radiology and to the science of imaging deserve comment so the extent and depth of his contributions are fully appreciated.
Most of those in our Society know that Bob, as the Louis Marx Professor of Radiology, has been Chairman of the Department of Radiology at NYU since 2001, having served previously as Chief of Neuroradiology and Associate Chairman of Radiology at the University of Pennsylvania. It is widely recognized that under Bob's Chairmanship, the Department of Radiology at NYU has become one of the outstanding clinical and research departments in the country. Fewer however realize the important national and societal awards he has been given and the national committees on which he has served. This brief communication will not mention all of his achievements nor will it outline his numerous academic publications but rather is intended to give readers a flavor of what an outstanding individual we have in our midst.
The recipient of the Javits Neuroscience Investigator Award in 1999, a member and subsequently Chair of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Diagnostic Radiology Study Section, a member of its National Advisory Council for Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering, and the first person to be awarded ASNR's Neuroradiology Education and Research Foundation Award for Outstanding Contributions in Research are just a few of the many honors Bob has received. Over the years Bob has been funded by the NIH, either as principal investigator, co-principal investigator, or co-investigator for more than 25 grants and among these his groundbreaking investigations in quantitative MR imaging and MR spectroscopy in multiple sclerosis (MS) have formed the basis for the complete analysis of patients with MS and for judging the effects of many therapeutic trials. In addition, those like myself who have worked with Bob in various capacities know of his no-nonsense logic, the depth of his intelligence, his straightforward approach to problems, boundless energy, and tremendous insights into the means of accomplishing goals whether fulfilling the mission of a society, journal, section, or department. Now the NYU School of Medicine and its hospitals will benefit from having a Dean and CEO who can invigorate an organization, set high goals, develop a vision, and, most important, see all of these initiatives through to fruition.
ASNR congratulates Bob Grossman on this monumental achievement and wishes him good fortune in his new role.
