Dr. Carter has served as president of the medical staff of the New England Medical Center, as president of the New England Roentgen Ray Society, and as a member of the promotion committee of the Tufts University School of Medicine. She served as president of the ASHNR in 1983–1984, and she was active in various collaborative efforts with the European Society of Head and Neck Radiology (ESHNR). Her vision led to a memorable international scientific effort culminating in a landmark joint meeting with the ESHNR held in Uppsala, Sweden, in 1988.
